Welcome to our website, here you can find all the information you need to know about the Washington Avenue Armory and why if you have not already visited this incredible and historic building. Located at 195 Washington Avenue, New York this Armory is officially known as the Washing Avenue Armory Sports and Convention area which today is used for a variety of reasons. Being able to hold over 3,500 in its capacity the Armory is used for concerts and sports events taking place in the local area.

The building itself is full of history being listed on the National Register of Historic places to ensure its well looked after. The Washington Avenue Armory was originally built in 1890 and was later renovated in the 1930’s, today there is little maintenance needed and the building is a beautiful design by state of the art architect Isaac Perry.

Back when the Armory was first built there was no suitable or professional facilities for basketball which was gaining huge popularity in the area at the time. Due to the large open space the Armory is host to, it created a brilliant playing area to host games of professional, college and minor league basketball games. The Washington Avenue Armory was later put to more use for a variety of reasons after the success of hosting basketball games.

During the 1960’s and 1970’s the WWF and wrestling association (today’s WWE) was gaining popularity not only in the local area but the entire country. With many people wanting to see the live events across the country this made the Washington Avenue Armory an excellent location to host huge wrestling matches. Weekend WWF matches would always be a sell-out and the Armory was perfect for creating the thrilling atmosphere many onlookers were eager to witness.

As the professionalism of sports began to grow throughout the 1980’s the Armory was put to more use of being the home to the professional basketball team, The Albany Patroons which were founded in 1982 but later folded in 2009 before their early success in winning two league championships in 1984 and 1988. Later the Albany Patroons to the Knickerbocker arena putting the Washington Avenue Armory into disuse.

Having excellent historic routes to professional sports, the most successful being basketball the Armory was bought in 2004 by the Albany Basketball & Sports Corporation who then went onto renovating the facility which later opened in 2005. This helped to bring the Armory back to life continuing its original routes of professional basketball. With this being said concerts were commonly hosted at the Armory too.

During December in 2007 the Armory had to cancel one of its concerts for a rock band because parts of the roof began to wear and even cave in. Today the Armory is currently the home of the Albany All Stars Roller Derby which is currently the capital regions first women’s roller derby league.

The Armory is still being put to good use today and has more plans to modernise the Armory putting it to more uses. For example their website announces they plan to open an underground mall allowing visitors the option to do shopping and spend days out. It is good to see the efficiency of the Armory being put to good use today like it was when first built back in 1890.

We highly recommend visiting the Armory if you are interested in its history or if you are looking to attend one of the events which takes place. Find all the information you need to know about the Armory and what’s going on at their helpful website.
